Dealing With Poker Downswings Like a Professional

12:42
More tips on poker ending downswings: https://automaticpoker.com/strategy/poker-slump-busting/ If you play poker long enough, you will deal with a soul-crushing downswing.. in fact, you will deal with soul crushing downswings multiple times a year. Playing poker professionally or semi-professionally is unique to other jobs in that, day to day, you never know whether you will actually make money or lose money. So being able to mitigate the losing periods we encounter is an extremely important skill to master. In this video, I give you 3 tips on how to navigate those times when everything just seems to be going the wrong way, help you minimize the losses you sustain, and get back on the winning track asap. I have had some pretty crazy downswings over the past few years. The most recent occurred during my spare change challenge. After a few really bad days, I took a deep breath, called upon my mental reserves and and managed to get back on track. Tip 1- The best way to deal with downswings happen before your next downswing. Most people fail at poker because of mental weakness and not understanding how poker works on a fundamental level. Make sure you understand that a long term poker career is actually just a series of upswings and downswings. No one runs exactly their expected value or expected win-rate day in and day out. One day you might run 50bb/100 and the next day -45bb/100.. while the -45bb/100 day really suck, you are still, after those two days, a 5bb winning player. It's when several of those losing days come at at once over consecutive days, that mind games can start and we get tricked into believing something is wrong with us, or that we are just unlucky, etc. etc. etc. Solution- Actively work on the mental side of poker. Try to distance yourself from the hand to hand and hour to hour results. You might do this by not looking at the cashier. I used to only look at my cashier once a week,.. its really libertaing to remain ignorant of how you did on a particular day. Does your daily poker result determine your mood? If so.. avoiding looking at day to day results is probably a good idea for you. Even during sessions we can use this tactic. If you stack your tables, or stack and tile your tables, don't watch individual all-ins to see if you won or not. Just move on to another hand on another table and focus on making the most +EV decision you can. It'd be nice to be a vulcan and be able to remain detached and completely logical all of the time, but unfortunately, we are humans. Focusing on each little result is the road to mental destruction. Remain positive, learn to think long term, stop worrying about short term results, or stop knowing about them altogether, and you will find you are tilting less, and not exacerbating the downswings you endure. Tip 2- Follow a reasonable bankroll management plan and stick to it. Don't chase losses, just move down, maybe even take a break, regain some confidence and grind it back up. My advice is to be very deeply bankrolled, making it less likely to ever sustain a downswing that requires moving down. If you are a part-time player, it's a good idea to keep the same amount you have online. In other words, if you have 3k online and grind 100nl... have 3k behind. If you hit a huge downswing down to like 2k online, you can move 500 from the bank account and lessen the period needed to rebuild. Just make sure you replenish the "emergency fund" once you are able. And be sure to bolster it during the good times. If poker is your sole source of income, I suggest always having at least 6 months of living expenses behind, preferably 1 year or more. You never want your poker downswing to put pressure on real life or force you to change your lifestyle. Tip 3- Make sure you continue to study and improve. Make sure you invest a portion of your bankroll to coaching and getting better. In fact, it's no secret that, the better you are, the less awful your downswings will be. I once went 18 months running about $20,000 under ev.. but still managed to win money during that period. How did I do this? I had a 10bb ev winrate during that period but a 2bb actual win-rate.. ouch right? All of those early years I spent building a solid foundation and my consistent daily study paid off. Imagine if I had a 4bb win-rate and had the same type of disparity between my ev and actual win-rate.. I would have probably been down to playing micros again and likely wouldn't be making this video. In summary, the best way to deal with a downswing actually has nothing to do with mitigating it when it happens. With proper preparation and knowledge, you can actively plan for downswings and understand that they are just part of the game. We do this by actively working on our mental game, following a conservative BR management plan, and working hard to become the best player we can be. http://www.automaticpoker.com/ https://www.facebook.com/automaticpoker/ https://twitter.com/automaticpoker/

How To Plan A Poker Hand (Advanced Preflop Strategy) | SplitSuit

38:00
"Preflop Planning" full video download and extras at: http://www.thepokerbank.com/videos/splitsuit/preflop-planning/ "Planning" is the next big step up from basic starting hand selection when it comes to preflop strategy. • Starting hand selection = choosing to play hands that are generally profitable from certain positions. • Planning = thinking about all the possible outcomes of different plays based on your starting hand, players left to act after you, logical reactions from them (and how you'd react to those), and position... then making the play with the set of greatest +EV outcomes. Planning obviously takes a bit more effort than straightforward starting hand selection, but that's why it's a more profitable approach to preflop play. Furthermore, with practice the entire process will become instinctive anyway. Preflop planning is basically a more advanced (and more profitable) form of starting hand selection. So instead of just looking at your cards and position, preflop planning includes thinking about how the hand could play out in different situations, and whether you can profit from those situations. You could just call it "thinking ahead", but hand planning and preflop planning are the more commonly used terms. Although this is titled as Preflop Planning, this video could easily be described as a video guide to playing before the flop in Texas Hold'em. SplitSuit covers all aspects of preflop strategy, including; opening, cold calling, set mining, raising, 3betting, 4betting, and there's even a dash of 5betting. All of these topics are covered using actual hand histories in the hand replayer. Released: 08 August 2011 ... ----- Support ThePokerBank.com: Here are some affiliate links. Expected Value and Hand Ranges in Poker

09:10
Find me on: http://gokupoker.com https://www.facebook.com/gokupoker In the 10th lesson of the "From Zero to Poker Hero" free poker course you will learn about expected value and hand ranges. EV or expected value is a concept used to describe the average outcome of a given scenario and you can apply it not only to your poker game, but also to lots of your life decisions. Hand Range is simply all the hands your opponent may be holding in a specific spot. In this lesson you will learn why it's crucial to put your opponent on a range of hands, and not a specific holding. You will also learn how you can make better decisions when you combine these two concepts of EV and hand ranges. Wanna know what's next? This course will teach you everything you need to know in order to beat the small stakes online games of no limit texas hold'em and most likely every homegame you’ll ever get to play. There will be a new lesson every friday, so make sure you subscribe! Next lesson will be on the 3-BET. Where to play online? http://bit.ly/gokupoker

Short handed poker and ICM masterclass with Dan Cates - Paul Phua Poker School

04:07
Heads-up poker expert “Jungleman” Dan Cates explains the critical importance of ICM when short-handed in a poker tournament. Exclusive video to the Paul Phua Poker School www.paulphuapoker.com. How do you adjust your tournament strategy when three or four-handed? Dan Cates: When it’s more short-handed, obviously, you’re playing more hands. I mean, it’s still just as relevant when people fold earlier in full ring, but you have to play a lot of hands in the blinds, specifically if it folds to the small blind you still have to play a lot of hands – you have to play over half your hands, actually. Although one thing that does happen in tournaments that is actually different from a short-handed cash game is that in tournaments, where you’re three or four-handed, sometimes ICM matters a ton in the late stages of tournaments, so actually you can end up playing either really loose or really tight depending on stack sizes and stuff like that. So I think that’s actually more important than how much looser you should play because you’re playing four-handed. Yeah, I just think that ICM matters more. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ICM? Dan Cates: What it means is, basically, your stack size and how much your chips are worth in the tournament, which is not related linearly like it is in a cash game. Like, in a cash game if you have $10,000 on the table you have $10,000, but in a tournament that’s not true. In a tournament, if you’re pretty short your chips are actually worth more that what they are, if you figured it out compared to the buy-in at the tournament, because you can still cash for higher than last place, so existing in the tournament matters quite a bit, and that’s why play changes more and more when you’re short-handed. The pay jumps affect how play matters dramatically. As an extreme example, if there are 26 players left and 25 players cash for $100,000, you really don’t want to be the one that busts. Things like this matter an awful lot in tournaments. ICM is just basically a way to, like… it just tries to model how much chips are worth in these situations where there are these pay jumps and where you can’t re-buy, basically. IF YOUR CHIPS IN A TOURNAMENT ARE MORE VALUABLE WHEN SHORT-HANDED, SHOULD YOU THEN PLAY LESS AGGRESSIVELY? Dan Cates: Well, the chips in your hand are not worth more, but the more chips you gain they are worth less and less, actually, unless you’re playing heads up. If you’re playing heads up then ICM doesn’t matter because there are only two people left. But if you’re playing short-handed, the more and more chips you get they are worth less and less. Each individual chip is worth more when you’re short-stacked than when you’re a large stack, but a large stack is quite an advantage, particularly if there are one or two short stacks in short-handed, because the medium stacks would really not like to bust if one player is very, very likely to bust. So a large stack can play very loosely and very aggressively against stacks that really… if there’s a significant advantage, large stacks should play very crazy against these players that have little choice but to wait until someone who has one big blind is about to bust. So in situations like that you would play loosely if you’re a large stack, but if you’re the medium stack in those situations you really just want to play very, very tight and wait for, like, a guy who just really has very little chance of moving up to bust, because if you bust yourself, it’s quite a mistake because of how the pay jumps work. #38 - E.V. Bettor - "Special Super Bowl Show: It's Higher Stakes Poker is What You're Playing"

01:12:30
To see links or read the transcript of the episode, visit us at: http://mebfaber.com/2017/02/03/podcast-episode-38-evbettor-special-super-bowl-show-higher-stakes-poker-youre-playing/ In honor of this Sunday’s Super Bowl, Episode 38 is a special, bonus “gambling” podcast. We welcome mystery guest, E.V. Better, which is an alias for “Expected Value Bettor.” Meb starts by asking E.V. how he got to this point in his career. E.V. had a traditional finance background, working at a long/short hedge fund for 5 years, but realized he could apply certain predictive analytics that work in the financial world to the sports betting world. He helped create a basketball model at Dr. Bob Sports and enjoyed it so much that he made the jump from traditional finance. Next, Meb requests a quick primer for the non-gamblers out there; for instance, how the various types of bets works, the “lines,” the most popular bets, and so on. E.V. gives us the breakdown. The conversation then drifts toward examples of “factors” when it comes to gambling (such as “value” or “momentum” is in the stock market). E.V. tells us there are really two schools of thought in traditional investing – fundamental and technical investing. When it comes to gambling, there are similarly two schools of thought; you have the strength of a team that’s measured by traditional stats (for example, net yards per pass) or technical factors (having been on the road for 14 days…having suffered 3 straight blow-out losses). When you combine these two factors, you better a better idea of which way to go with your wager. These leads to two questions from Meb: One, how many inputs go into a multi-factor model? And, two, how do you replace older factors that don’t have as much influence or predictive power as they used to? E.V. gives us his thoughts. Meb asks about “weird” or interesting factors that are effective. E.V. points toward “travel distance,” though the effect has diminished over time as travel has become easier. He also points toward “field type.” This leads into a discussion about betting against the consensus (contrarian investor, anyone?). And this leads into a common investing mistake – recency bias. For example, because the Broncos won the Super Bowl last year, people expected them to be great again this year…and they didn’t even make the playoffs (Meb is still bitter). Meb steers the direction away from the NFL. Whether basketball, baseball, or whatever other sport, you’re simply trying to find an edge over the house. Meb brings up “variability” (the more games the better if you have a slight edge), and asks how this changes over different sports. E.V. says duration of season is a huge factor. Also, the level of data available for analysis is key (for example, the amount of data in baseball is amazing). But overall, E.V. says the goal is reduce the variance to make thing as simple and predictive as possible to find your edge. Meb asks about underrepresented sports (curling, or NASCAR) offering more, or better opportunities (think “small caps” versus the “Apples” of the investing world). E.V. says the issue is finding a counter-party. You might be a great curling modeler, but have fewer market participants from which to profit. This leads into how to quantify an edge, and what a good edge value should be. E.V. says a 10%+ edge would be fantastic, but it’s important to be conservative in your estimate of just how big your edge is. After all, you won’t have a consistent edge every game. Meb makes an interesting correlation to investing you’ll want to hear. Next, Meb asks about gambling as an asset class. Where would gambling fit into a portfolio and how would it work together? E.V. says sports is a unique alternative asset class that’s uncorrelated to other markets. This quality makes gambling an interesting addition to a portfolio. Next, Meb moves to “quick hits” – shorter questions, many of which came from listeners via Twitter. - What’s the worst bad beat you’ve seen? - Have you looked at “intra-game” gambling, or do you only focus on full-game bets? - How does a sport with a small dispersion in scoring (like soccer) affect how you bet versus a high-scoring sport (like basketball)? - Have you thought about any lines that change over the course of a day based on the concept of betters losing in the morning and becoming increasingly aggressive in the afternoon (going on tilt, trying to win back money). - What do you think about “the hot hand”? You’ll want to hear E.V.’s answers. Finally, we get to the topic du jour – the Super Bowl. Meb asks E.V. directly, “Who do you like with New England at -3?” If you’re thinking about betting this Sunday, don’t miss it. There’s far more. Catch it all in Episode 38

As part of that agreement, PokerStars agreed to commit to pay outstanding balances player FTP for customers outside the United States within 90 days. The amount of these items is estimated at US $ 184 million. Well, PokerStars is looking to promise the PokerStars Blog this week posting photos of a Hercules loaded with 15 tons of computer equipment to relocate the FTP servers based on PokerStars in the Isle of Man. It's a huge task but it has been reported that everything is blank for FTP to relaunch non-US players on November 6, 2012. PokerStars has also been working with regulators in different jurisdictions to ensure that the payment process to non-US players meet all local requirements and that players receive their money without any problems or delays. For players from Australia, New Zealand and Asia, things will be a little easier than that. Full Tilt Poker is repeated in its entirety in this region the November 6, 2012, with players having full access to their accounts. At this stage, we believe that there will be no restrictions on access to this money apart from the usual processes of identification. There are also there has been no announcement about other features such as tournament entries, frequent player points or rakeback accounts. One step at a time! Players in the US have their run at a later date by the US government payments, although no details on this process at this stage. There is a big argument over GTO vs Exploitative play when it comes to poker. In my opinion both are very important and both should be considered when making a decision. In this episode I rush home to Indiana to be with my family for the 3rd time in the last 6 weeks. However, prior to leaving town I was able to get in one lonely session of the week. I cover a few spots where unusual bet sizings are used on the river. Small Blind Jamming Considerations | Poker Bubble play

Want to improve your poker game for FREE? Join our email poker course and learn three CRITICAL SKILLS necessary for tournament success: https://goo.gl/7qQsCf It's a 5-day course where I send you a lesson through email once per day. Sign up and get immediate access to the first lesson right now to improve your tournament poker game for free. In this video we look at some of the considerations we should make when planning to jam on the bubble from the small blind vs a big blind opponent. UIn the first case we look at where our opponent is playing a standard game, Q8s is a standard jam. However, when our opponent is tighter we may be able to get away with raising small instead of jamming so we don't put our tournament life on the line without sacrificing any upside returns. Against a looser opponent who isn't considering bubble play or ICM, we should fold out hand 10bb deep as is likely to overcall and hurt our tournament EV. Going Bananas With 86o - Was It Good? | SplitSuit

08:39
Want to see how to correctly attack limpers? Read my complete guide for punishing limpers here: https://www.splitsuit.com/punishing-limpers-with-large-preflop-raises It's amazing how the hands that should have been folded preflop can really end up getting away from us. In this spot, Dan attacks a gaggle of limpers with 86o, and the discussion starts here. After getting multiple callers, flopping top pair, AND facing a bet+call - Dan has some big decisions to make. Concepts include attacking limpers preflop, planning ahead and estimating how many callers your raise would likely get, SPR, and how to react when holding a pair+gutshot. This is a simple hand, but a great jumping off point for other factors and considerations. ----- Support ThePokerBank.com: Here are some affiliate links. Loose or tight poker play? Rui Cao, Wai Kin Yong and Paul Phua

03:48
The latest “In Conversation With Paul Phua” video features the brilliant young players Rui Cao and Wai Kin Yong. Rui Cao is a French poker pro who first braved “The Big Game” cash tables in Macau back in 2011. Wai Kin Yong is a fast-rising star who has racked up more than $3 million in live tournament earnings just since September: he first won the Triton Charity Tournament in Manila, then in November the Triton Super High Roller Series Main Event as well; and this February he finished sixth in the Triton Super High Roller Series Main Event. Watch part 2 of this video here: https://youtu.be/FTzHpr7VJYk In discussing what they have learned from each other and from Paul Phua, they pass on valuable lessons about whether to play tight or loose. Even more importantly, the discussion shows how good players are always talking about poker with other good players: comparing notes on hands and playing styles, working out what they can learn from each other and how they can play better in future: WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM PAUL IN THE EARLY DAYS? Wai Kin Yong: That would be discipline, I guess. I think that is one of the most important things in poker, because if you are not disciplined you are just giving up EV. Paul Phua: Especially in a tough game, yes? Wai Kin Yong: Yes, especially in a tough game. Paul Phua: If you steal one big hand then it’s very hard to recover your losses, you know. Wai Kin Yong: Good players punish you when you make mistakes a lot, and they punish you really hard, so you must be very, very disciplined, like Paul. Rui Cao: I lack discipline the most, I think. One of the most. Paul Phua: One of your weaknesses, right? Rui Cao: Yes, it’s one of the biggest weaknesses. I think Paul’s discipline is really, really strong. Wai Kin Yong: Same. Yeah, I mean sometimes I play with Paul down there with maybe just like 100 or 200 pesos, and he’s, like, still A game. Even me and him, we are just going to…. Paul Phua:Play more crazy! Wai Kin Yong: Play super crazy. Definitely not a winning game! Paul Phua: It’s not in my character! Rui Cao: It’s like a kind of an ego thing to really want to show off and to let the other people know that I want control here. I think it’s an ego problem. Wai Kin Yong: Yes, definitely. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT EACH OTHER? Rui Cao: First thing I learned is never bluff Wai Kin too much. I know I can’t resist, but it’s not a good idea to bluff him. Wai Kin Yong: I think I’m kind of sticky sometimes with hands. Rui Cao: No. Sometimes when you know you’re losing, you find one hand. ‘Oh, I can beat this one. I call.’ Wai Kin Yong: I always find the hands to call. Always. WHAT MISTAKES DO YOUNG PLAYERS MAKE? Paul Phua: Young players generally tend to be more aggressive. Over-aggressive sometimes could be their mistake. Aggressiveness is good, but over-aggressive is maybe not profitable for certain types of games Rui Cao: Yes, I do agree. I think sometimes lack of patience as well. Paul Phua: Yes, also lack of patience. Especially in a 7, 8, 9 handed game, you know, patience is so important. Rui Cao: Yes, I do agree. Especially for online players who rarely play more than 6 handed. So when it’s 9 handed sometimes, especially live and they don’t have many hands, they want to play over-aggressive because they don’t have the chance to win pots. DO YOU PLAY IN LONG GAMES? Rui Cao: Sometimes we play super long sessions. Yes, another skill is just stamina. Sometimes you get tired and you don’t play your A game because it’s hard after 50 hours, so you have just to manage these long sessions. I think there’s different kinds of sessions, because you can make big mistakes because you are tired, or in this session maybe you’ll be losing big. You have to control everything, I think. Paul Phua: Nowadays also there are less sessions of 40 hours, 50 hours. Why? Maybe our friends tell us it’s not good for our health, our families keep complaining, ‘I don’t see you for two days, three days’! So, yes, it has come to that, you know, but we play still long hours compared with other games; 15, 20 hour games are very common. Where the Money REALLY comes from in NLH POKER

19:49
Sometimes, as we learn new skills, it can be overwhelming. How many combos of KQ does villain have when I have the Kd blocker? Does he have a range advantage or do I? Should I turn this small pair into a bluff or does it fit better into my checking range? What are the equity distributions? Can I get stacks in with two streets or will I need to bet all three? And on and on and on and on. But one thing we can ALWAYS do is get back to the basics. We can always just calmly ask ourself, "where does the money come from?" Let's take a look at the way money ACTUALLY at it's root most level, moves from one players' stack to another's on a street by street basis. Let's learn to keep our eye on the EV. Every thing else will follow from that core idea. If you can keep your eye on the EV you will always know where the money is really coming from at each decision point in every hand you play.
